چکیده

This document summarizes early results and experiences of the collaborations between the European project ”Dependable Embedded Components and Systems” (DECOS) (IST-511764) and the NSF ITR Project titled ”Foundations of Hybrid and Embedded Software and Systems”. The collaboration has started with a visit of a researcher from Vienna University of Technology at Vanderbilt University in summer 2005, a visit from a graduate student in Vienna and a faculty visit from Vanderbilt researchers at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary. 1 Description of Projects 1.1 Project on Foundations of Hybrid and Embedded Software and Systems The NSF ITR Project titled ”Foundations of Hybrid and Embedded Software and Systems” aims at building the foundations of Modern Systems Science (MSS). It is a sustained effort to create a new generation of engineers that are comfortable with the juncture of computation and physical phenomena. The research is carried out at UC Berkeley’s Center for Hybrid and Embedded Software Systems, the Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Software-Integrated Systems, and the University of Memphis. Educational outreach programs include the California community college system, which feeds many of the engineering students to UCB and other State Universities, and HBCUs and universities with high minority populations in the South.

Allocation of Dependable Software Modules under Consideration of Replicas

In dependable embedded systems, it is current practice to assign each application subsystem to a dedicated processor. However, several activities aim at an integrated approach, allowing the deployment of multiple application subsystems on a single distributed computer system [1]. The resulting large number of feasible allocations of tasks to processors makes it hard for the developer to determi...

Connections, Communication and Collaboration in Healthcare’s Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

A more sophisticated understanding of the unpredictable, disorderly and unstable aspects of healthcare organisations is developing in the knowledge translation (KT) literature. In an article published in this journal, Kitson et al introduced a new model for KT in healthcare based on complexity theory. The Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model (KTCNM) provides a fresh perspective by mak...

Platform Modeling in Safety-Critical Embedded Systems

This paper describes a model-based development process for safety-critical embedded real-time systems that are based on the DECOS integrated architecture. The DECOS architecture guides system engineers in the development of complex embedded real-time systems by providing a framework for integrating multiple application systems within a single distributed computer system. This integration is sup...

Enhancing Graphical Model-Based System Design—An Avionics Case Study

Graphical model-based system design is very appealing. However, there exist many different formalisms, with different semantics—as far as they do have well-defined semantics— and differing capabilities of the accompanying tools. In this paper, we present a case study from the avionics domain and report on the experiences in using different modeling languages and tools. The focus here is on the ...

Architecting Dependable Access Control Systems for Multi-domain Computing Environments

Modern computing systems are built based on Service Oriented Architectures and are made up of multiple distributed components. They often span separate and autonomous domains of administration and involve dynamic collaboration. Resources and services are exposed as Web Services that are a natural choice for achieving interoperability in a heterogeneous computing environment. Access control syst...
